I have a green water and a Brown algae problem in my Rainbow Fry tank. It is a 10 Gal. Bare tank, Just and air stone and a filter with a pre-filter. The brown algae is easily controlable, I do 3 5-10% water changes a week. I have read that Green Water is actually a Good Food source for the fry. Is that true or should I be a little more concrned about it. Also what causes Green water?

To much direct sunlight is one cause. The only way i know of to get rid of it altogether is changing the water or using a uv sterilizer.

i have the GREEN WATER continusly its light that does it cover tank for a few days it will go away although it will come back if you dont shade the light
ive tried the uv sterilizer didnt do squat? had it running now for about 2 weeks still need t cover tank im leaving it on anyhow cause they say it also kills bacteria? hope it does a better job of that than killing algae? goodluck

uv sterilizers kill bacteria (white cloudy water) not algae (green cloudy water).

i'm not sure if the green water is good for the fry. . .you may have it 1. because of light and 2. because of overfeeding. fry tend to miss a lot of the food that gets past them, so it becomes a nutrient source for the algae. i would up the water changes to about 25-30% each time (changing out 1 gallon doesn't do much anyway), feed a little less, and siphon off the bottom of the tank a couple times a week to get rid of food and poop. you could fit a sponge to the end of the tubing or even stick an empty filter cartridge over the end of the tube. when you're done, get out your net and hold it under the sponge so that everything falls into it when you take the tubing out of the water. you might also want to get another filter and prefilter, when all those babies start growing they're going to make the water very dirty very quickly.

Ok, guys! here is what i have found out Infusoria/Green water Is good for fry. I actually wanted Green water when the fry were born, but had no idea how to get it. Now I have it figured out, Leave the Tank light on 24/7, keep heat about 80 and in about 5 weeks the Green water will thrive. :dance2: here is a link to support my findings. lol http://home.clara.net/xenotoca/infusoria.htm
