As some of you know I've been breeding some fish (mollies and guppies right now) and I have a few 10g grow out tanks (to make sure they all get food). With about 20-30 fry growing out in it do I need to worry about upgrading the tank size once they get so big? They will be sold to the LFS. I know the concept behind an overstocked tank but I'm not having spikes and all the fish have room to swim (they vary in size from when they were born so there will not be a time when more than 20 of them are very large) but I don't want to get into a situation where the fish get stunted or anything. If I do need to move them to a larger tank before they'd be large enough to sell I can live with that I would just have to go buy it. I may be over thinking it a bit but that's why I ask you guys =)

Lol I'm happy for ya man. I need to get a 29 to grow out angels as soon as mine pair off but until then I'm still shafted with 3 10g's

Oh wait, has anyone ever tried making a tank taller? I could take the glass from an old crappy 10g I have and seal it to the top of the glass on my grow out 10. It'll add a lot more swimming room while keeping the same footprint. It sounds dumb to me because water pressure may just bend the top pieces off but ya never know what people have made work

Isn't the $1 per gallon sale still on? I'd grab a 29 now while you still can. You probably won't see another one of these sales till after christmas. For raising angelfish fry, I'd say a 55 or even 40 breeder would be a better option than a 29. Unless you only plan on raising only a few of the fry at a time.

Yeah hopefully I can put some money together before it's over (the 17th I believe). We had almost a thousand bucks stolen from us including our rent money a few days back =/ so it's pretty bad timing. Hopefully I'll get it squared around =)

And yeah just a few angel fry to start but you're right

Hi
have raised a lot of different kinds of fish fry and the recurrent problem is "stunting" Ususally within a week you will notice a lot of size variation. Separate by size into at least two groups. . Lots of water changes and lots of food preferably live food . With livebearers you can get maturity within two months . generally the faster they grow the better the specimens as adults. With livebearers you will have to separate the sexes also.
I have used sterlite tubs ,as a cheap alternative. as well as kiddie pools almost anything that will hold water lol.
Sorry to hear about the theft !! That sucks!! gary

Thanks Gary. So you think the 10 is a bit too small after a couple weeks? I don't mind using a tub of some sort

If you feed correctly and do daily water changes and occasionally separate by size as previously mentioned you should have no trouble rapidly raising 50 Guppies to an inch in size in a 10 gal tank.
