Do all guapotes have the same level of intelegence or is it true that doviis and jaguars are the smartest fish?

intelligence = the ability to apply knowledge to manipulate one's environment or to think abstractly as measured by objective criteria (as tests). therefor i think it's a mistake to attribute intelligence to a fish.

another definition of intelligence is the ability to acquire and apply knowledge. this includes the ability to recognize patterns and predict outcomes. a jaguar cichlid that has never been fed by the owners friend, wont come to the top waiting for food when the friend is the only person in the room (although he may flare up and try to ward off the friend, but that is due to their territorial temperment), however as soon as the owner steps in the jag is at the top waiting for food, that is recognition of a pattern and that is intelligence. granted, they cant do math or think about their purpose in the universe as far as we can tell, but i would definitely not say they are absent of intelligence. and as far as manipulating their environment, i dont think i have to go into any details with cichlid owners on that one.

I have 2 managuense, 2 red devils, a dovii, and a convict along with other catfish and plecos. my stand has a drawer where I keep the fish food (hikari :) ) and everyday around feeding time I have to open the drawer to get the food , duh, and every time the drawer makes a sound the managuenses and dovii are the first ones to the top while the other fish hide until they realize im going to feed them. the managuenses and dovii have enough brains to know that everytime they hear the drawer open then they are about to get fed. oh and they dont respond to anyone doing it, when my mom or brother or frends do it the managuenses and dovii give them "the eye" and the devils try to "kill" them.

so lets put this together: owner responsive, they interact with their surroundings by digging and redecorating till they see fit, and can recognize patterns. that is a pretty smart fish, smarter than some mammels.

Oscars are even smarter if not the smartest cichlid. they can be taught to do tricks and can be pet by the owners, along with the other "features" thats almost puppy like!

hey betta ...i didn't put you down in the least nor did i question YOUR intelligence or facility with the english language. i simply expressed my view that fish probably don't qualify as intelligent beings. you asked the question. i gave my opinion. sheeesh.

Really? Oscars are smarter?? A Trimac can be peted too you know that? I dont know about other big cichlids. Maybe they can be peted too. Just need to spend time with them maybe.
So what kind of tricks can be taught to a oscar? Or was it just a joke?

i heard oscars can be taught to do simple tricks for food i hav only seen one

my biology teacher at my old high school has a 110 gal tank in the class room and he has a 13 inch oscar he made it roll over for food I was amazed. he held a piece of shrimp and did a little circle with it and the oscar basicaly rolled over. I asked my teacher how did he manage to teach a fish to do that, and he said "with hard work and it helps to hav a smart perticapent"

so pretty much after that im a believer and can trimacs really be petted? I know red devils cant all they do is bite

Trimac can get petted. I've done it myself. I used to have 1. And a friend of mine had one too. And his let him pet it too. Cool huh? Hmmm.... I wonder if we can get the guapotes to do the same. Reptile guy has a jaguar.. Lets get him to try it out.

both times i have been bitten by her i was trying to do tank maintenance and she drew blood both times. she either attacks or avoids my hand. i cant imagine being able to pet her. with one that wasnt so territorial i could definitely see petting and tricks, but mine is just too aggressive. she flares up at me if she sees me move across the room.
