Yes, we need to know what species they are. Some halfbeaks require brackish water, others require freshwater. One thing I will recommend is to start culturing fruit flies. All halfbeaks will devour them. I ordered my cultures through The Bug Farm. The hydei variety are what I prefer - they are flightless but still have wings that flap around and attract the fish to them. I also recommend their (the bug farm's) culturing media. I experimented with homemade mixtures but had better results using the media from them.

What is their max. size when they mature?

It depends on the species. Celebes max out at around 3"-4". Most of the wrestling halfbeaks are smaller in size I believe. Some species such as the redfinned halfbeaks will grow larger than the Celebes.

I dont know........neither does the guy at the petstore. those which i have purchased are, light bluish bodied, and have darkblue with feeble orange sheen on their sides, and tiny red spot on their anal fin.

With all of the traffic on this site, surely there are some other halfbeak keepers? The lack of information on these amazing fish surprises me (on the entire web, not just this site). I hate to come across as an expert on these fish just because I am one of the very few people keeping them.

"From the description you give they could either be wrestling halfbeaks or celebes. Confusion is very common when it comes to identifying these fish. Which of the following do they more closely resemble?"

No, they are not the celebes. they r exactly like the wrestling halfbeak in the picture. and i've myself observed them swordfighting with their beaks today.

so....what are the requirements to keep them in tip top condition ?

i've got a 40g tank.
