I noticed my 2 shubunkins in my 55 gallon gulping for air now and then. After a few weeks I realized they only do it after they eat...
Its a 55 gallon, 2 shubunkins, one fantail, and one pleco.
The tank has 2 HOB filters, one of the filters has 2 out takes of water so theres really 3 streams flowing into the tank, so I don't think its an oxygen problem. I drop the flakes in the filter out take so they flow down into the tank, and they eat them there, I'm just trying to avoid the fish gulping air at the top while eating. After swimming about a minute making sure theres no food floating anywhere they start gulping, and it lasts a few minutes, then they go back to swimming normal, any ideas? Only the shubunkins do it, the fantail doesnt.

Maybe they're just looking for more food?

This is actually normal behavior for goldfish and koi. Not a thing to be worried about. If you watch everytime they do a lot of exercise they go to the top and gulp air. This is an effective way of recovering the oxygen that they have burned with all the "strenuous" activity.
