2 days ago we completly cleaned out our goldfish tank and now the fish are gulping as a person would gulp for air. Does anyone has any suggestions what this would be and how to alleviate our aggitated fish?? The tank is 25 litres and has 6 medium sized fish in it. We have a small filter but no real plants in the tank. Any help would be appreciated.
Also can anyone tell us how to reduce algae growth in the tank?
Thanks

Your tank is horribly overstocked. In addition, your through cleaning of the aquarium that you have most likely resulted in the deaths of all the nitrifying bacteria that were somehow able to keep the fish alive.

If you have test kits, I'd definitely watch for a huge ammonia spike followed by a nitrite spike.

Is that what gulping means?

When fish gulp for air it means that the tank is overstocked? What if it is only one of the fish that is in the tank that gulps and no other fish do it?

That is too small for one goldfish let alone 6. I would find a new home for all of them. Also you are never supposed to clean 100% of the tank. You will lose all of your good bacteria.

I'm afraid 25 litres would only accommodate a Siamese Fighting fish (with heating and filtration) and about four zebra danios :D Goldfish are on a par with the larger Cichlids in terms of their requirements for space and filtration. Even one 1" Goldfish is too much for a tank that size :( :(

Goldfish are well known ammonia machines, which is why I like to use them to cycle new tanks. When I gave away my goldfish I had put all of them in a two gallon bucket (nine goldfish, all about 2 inches long and one 4-inch Koi) in the fifteen minutes it took to drive them to their new home the ammonia smell had become overpowering. If I were going to keep goldfish again (which I REALLY want to) I wouldn't put more than three or four n a 55 gallon tank with a powerful wet/dry filter.

Thanks very much for your guys it's much appreciated!!! Seems we need to brush up on our goldfish keeping skills!
