Aright guys,
What are the chances of two guppies in the same tank getting dropsy? I lost one a few weeks ago to it and now I think another one has it. All the water params are fine, I check them at least once a day, especially now since this is happening. Its the 10 gallon fish tank in my signature, 5 male fancy guppies and 3 otos. The guppies don't bother each other, they're a really calm group, they all swim together and dont really ever chase each other around. Yesterday was when I noticed Tux the guppy's stomach seemed a little bigger than the rest and he lays on the bottom just chilling a good chunk of the day. Otherwise he is up and swimming around the top with the rest and he just looks fatter than all of them. When my other guppy died (he was the oldest in the tank, I had had him for about 1.5 years but he was full grown when I got him, so who knows if it was his time or what? water was perfect when he died.... the rest of my guppies I've had for about 1.5 months) I took out the dead one that same day, and he was pretty well wedged in a plant at the bottom of the tank (I don't think the other guppies even noticed him). So what should I do?

***Sidenote***My dad had a freak accident with the first Oto I ever owned when he put some anti-ich medicine in the tank without asking me and the Oto died the next day. I would love to treat the tank if its possible because I dont want anymore guppies to get this.

I know dropsy is the symptoms for something more serious.... but I thought that bacterial dropsy only came from bad water? Is it possible its from something else in my tank? Or is it really possible for my luck to have it that I picked 2 guppies with kidney failure? Any thoughts are appreciated! Thanks!

Here's some pics of the guppy.... I took them with another one in the shot thats the same size so you all could see the stomach difference... Tux is the red and blue one....

It's quite possible you picked two guppies with bad genetics. It happens a lot with breeding specific strains of guppies for fancy tails. But it's also quite possible you have a pocket of infection somewhere in your tank, and it's slowly breeding bacterial outbreaks. Clean out your substrate and plants, and see if you can find another cause.

In breeding guppies for the last five years, the biggest recurring problem I've had is a few of every generation develop kidney failure. I've even tried hand dosing with tetracycline, and I'm positive it's purely genetic.
