It's funny I never have seen this in my tank, but today, I was picking up my son at daycare and they have a 10g tank in the lobby. In the 30 seconds I was watching, I saw a young male guppy swim next to a female 4 or 5 times it's size. All of a sudden, the female took off with the male attached swimming violently all over the tank for about 20 seconds with the male being flung left and right.

Has anyone seen this? Is this the actual moment? Is this typical? I can't imagine how the male could complete his mission with the way he was being thrown around!

But after 20 seconds, they decoupled and he swam away from her.

Has to be, right?

thats guppy mating for ya..

Yup and hey just be glad the guy held on. A lot of times I see them not make it two seconds lol.

2 seconds and he's successful? LOL.

Thanks guys. It was actually pretty funny and interesting watching. Does that make me a peeping Tom? :)

Yea, when I was a kid and kept livebearers, I used to snicker about that all the time.

Now you want weird? I was at the bat exhibit at the zoo last year when it happened to be mating season. Reallllly bizzare.

Not only is that enough time, but the female guppy will store enough sperm for multiple births! In other words, he knocked her up for the next few months.

Sometimes they maneuver the female against the glass, into a corner, then all of a sudden, jab, they're coupled, and the female looks like she's just violently shaking for the better part of 5 seconds (jigga-jigga-jigga-jigga-jigga), then they split off in different directions.

Strangest thing I've ever seen.
