I was thinkin about setting up a guppy tank, probably with some other non aggressive fish, but mainly guppies. I was wondering if any guppy experts out there could tell me a little something about the set up that would be ideal for the fish. After cycling of course. I know guppies don't take well to the nitrogen cycle. I was thinking a very planted 20 gallon high. I don't think I need to really over-filter like I do with my Oscars, etc. Normal flourescent lighting, some rocks, floating plastic plants for the inevidable fry to hide from their hungry parents, heater around 78-80 degrees F.

What do you think?

I take care of 100's of fish tanks at work...one more couldnt hurt.

I love guppies! I say go for it! Guppies only, maybe a few cories on the bottom.

I'd start off with 6 males and 10 females... plants galore, lots of java moss, maybe tied to some rock caves...

Sounds like a nice tank!!!

In my experience, guppies are pretty easy to work with. I personally think they look best in a planted tank, and a 20g would be ideal If you don't intend to raise huge numbers of Fry. They really like plants and will graze algea and whatever else off of the leaves. if you don't overfeed guppies tend to keep a tank fairly spotless. they spend roughly 25 hours a day alternating between feeding and mating. They are a really cool fish to watch IMO. My guppy tanks have always been species specific, so as far as tank mates, I don't have any great suggestions.

Hmm N8 I would love to do that but what about work?
Any way it would get old after a few days I think…

I would start with 5 males and 10 females. I had a god farm going when I stared with mine a few years back. They will eat most of there babies if given the chance so the numbers should stay in check.

BEFORE I WAS 10
I found the less I did with my guppy tank the better they did. You know like not change the water just top it off. Forget about the Whisper and not change the filter. I think they went a year with out me feeding them a few times. Just let the plants grow they can trim them if needed.

But now my 2 55 gallon guppy tanks are a lot different. They have a good output of feeder fish so I’m happy.

I don't get it... I've had my SW nano-reef for about 2 months with absolutely no problems... but I can't keep guppies alive.... .

Fancy guppies seem to be far less hardy than they used to. I have lost several in the early period after purchase, and in tanks that otherwise contained healthy fish. I suspect the gene pool is a little thin with most fancies these days. on the flip side a dozen feeders almost always survive and thrive. but you don't get the size or the color if that is what you are after. Feeders tend to be largely endlers rather than guppies in our area, and they are a joy to watch as well but far more chaotic than guppies.
