what are some good tankmates for guppies? i will keep them in a 20 gal L and was thinking about platies. will the platies nip the guppy's fins?

Most community fish do fine with guppies. I don't think platies are fin nipers. You want to avoid tiger barbs, or for that matter most barbs in general are fin nippers. You have many choices. tetras, cories etc.
The five banded barb, very alike the tiger barb with exception to behaviour, would be good if you want a barb. They are a very peaceful barb, and so break the stereotype of finnippers. Like Fish Hunter said just avoid those that would go for the fins of fancy male guppies, and platy would be ideal. You could maybe go for some corydoras catfish as well, other livebearers such as mollies or swordtails, possible some tetras (although some do carry a fin nipping reputation - so be careful), zebra danios, leopard danios, queen danios (and any other danios you might come across...)...there are tones of fish you could choose from. Just be careful not to overstock your tank, and if ever there is a fish you would like to keep with them but are unsure of, then just ask us here!
A nice shoal of neons mix well with fancy guppies, beautiful colours in your tank.
I have previously kept guppies and platties togather with no anomosity between the two.
