Well I just setup my first brackish/marine tank setup and a gymnothorax tile. This fish was at the LFS where I work and I hand fed him for months. A customer came in and bought him but brought him back after a week or so. While he was out I realized I really liked this moray eel and decided to put him in my 20 gallon long. He is doing great eating krill and has a castle he hides in and sticks his head out of. He eats on his own now without being hand fed.

I have a 45 gallon that I'm thinking of moving him to and I'm thinking of adding tankmates. I've read on the internet that these fish can accidently bite other fish even if the other fish are bigger than them. I'm not so sure this is true. Maybe this moray is more docile than other species. I've hand fed him for months and he seems very gentle. Also a coworker's brother has one with fish without problems. I've read these fish have poor eyesight yet he reacts to me when he sees me across the room so I doubt this as well. Lack of information and misinformation seems abundant on these guys.

I was thinking of adding some scats, but I'm just learning about brackish/marine as our store is 99% freshwater with 4 brackish tanks. After doing research I think scats get too big. I'm wondering what others may have succesfully kept with this species or any suggestions for a 45 gallon others may have. I'm thinking of 2 knight gobies and maybe even trying some corals and a clown fish if I get him to full marine. I've read and been told all morays eventually can go to full marine.

So has anyone tried these with tankmates and what are some good candidates?

Anyone kept one in a fully marine tank before and is it true that eventually he must be in a marine tank as I was told by another LFS employee?

If what you have is indeed G. tile, full marine salinity might not be ideal.

Can you post an image?

Compare to the fish depicted here.

Note: The first fish is actually a "swamp eel", likely Monopterus sp.

I had my g.tile in a brackish tank along with a green scat and a red scat. There were also several mollies but these were eaten by the eel every now and then.I didnt think my eel was interested in live food either but I witnessed him catching/squeezing to death and swallowing an unlucky molly.I fed mine mostly on salad prawns and frozen lancefish.I used to hand feed him but he got my finger by accident and they have little needle teeth (ouch). They do have poor eyesight but react to movement.I dont think these fish need to be in full marine conditions, brackish should be fine. However small fish like knight gobies will probably be eaten.

Ok here we go. That page says its for Echidna Rhodochilis (incorrectly spelled too) otherwise known as the freshwater moray eel (not a freshwater eel as the page states). The first two pictures are of a Echidna Rhodochilus (Proper spelling). It also has pictures of two other species as well. The picture labeled snowflake is a Gymnothorax Tile (my eel). An actual snowflake is Echidna Nubulosa http://saltaquarium.about.com/library/photos/blpicfishsbakersnowflakeeel.htm. Most pictures on this page are a Gymnothorax, but the information is most likely for Rhodochilus. Hope I don't hurt anyones feelings but honestly this is a terrible page that just adds to confusion.

Thanks Haggisman that goes along with what I was thinking. I knew he would eat small fish and yeah maybe knight gobbies fall into that category. I'm glad to hear another person was able to keep one with a scat and it sounds like maybe these can stay brackish after all. From what I hear though my 45 gallon might not be enough for a scat so I guess I need to find something that only gets about 5-6 inches and get like 2-3 of them. I was also thinking a figure 8 puffer but these might get attacked too.

my four freshwater morays live with two green skats , they seem fine in freshwater but im getting ready to acclimate them to salt to live with needle nosed gars and bull sharks(columbian) . Im still confused to which species of eels they really are , so until im certain they will stay at a brackish level..
I think they are gymnothorax tile.
One of my eels jumped out, I thought he was dead and when I went to pick him up, he bit me so bad, he wouldnt let go , so I flung him, he died days later, maybee because he had no water for 30+ minutes or from the fall . R.i.p.... The rest of my eels love to eat mollies. I learned this the hard way,,

they also ate green spotted puffers and bumble bee gobies I had no idea they would ever eat at this point , I thought they were going to die of starvation , but there great now that they have eaten all of my other fish
now they eat guppies and small goldfish :hang: :shark: :coffee:
I love these smilies
