Can this work? Havent been to the store to play with it. Its a price im willing to do and would it be enough gallon per hour for a 10 gallon planted shrimp tank?

For all the stuffing around you might have to do, why not go an Eden 501?

Mind you, mocking something up could be fun, just for laughs, but if you're on a budget...

I have a Tom Rapids mini canister filter available for $18 + shipping. It would be fine for a planted 10 w/shrimp.

are they? i had considered getting 2 of them and using them on a 10g fry tank to keep things under control, im not needing them yet however. are they quite?

They are very quiet. Much quieter than airpumps or HOB's. They'd work well for a fry tank with a sponge over the intake. The spray bar that comes with it is cute and allows you to control the current well.

Oh wow those look great. I was about to break down and but the Zoo med 501. Will the Toms Can filter work for a lily pipe if I ever feel like going that route?

I've got a Tom Rapids on a 10 gallon that works great. Even for a very overstocked and over planted one like mine.

The only downside is it is a pain to do maintenance on.

What part is a pain about it? The thing I saw was the filter media. Do I need to buy the one made for it or can I just use a mesh bag and fill that up with carbon or something
