Hagen Natural Plant System CO2 unit question.

I have been using this CO2 unit for several years now with my 30gal tank and it seems to work very well. Though the activator and stabilizer packet s are not very cheap. Obviously the Activator is yeast, but does anyone know what the stabilizer is. I would like to be able to just get this from my grocery store.

2 cups of sugar, 1/4 tsp of yeast works for me.

so in our opinion the stabilizer is not needed? Does it speed up the conversion of the sugar without the stabilizer?

It seems to last close to 22 days with a fairly consistent release of bubbles. I am not to into all of the chemistry testing to figure out my PPM of CO2, i know there are kits for this but it has worked real well so far, in 2 years I have yet to have an algae outbreak and my plants always need to be cut back every 3 months.

Just trying to save alittle time and money as the graocery store is much closer than the LFS.

Stabilizer is baking soda. It buffers the KH, or how stlable the pH is. You should be testing. With out it, you will never know what is going on.
