hmm, along the same thought, how about cutting a piece of wooden airstone and sticking that into the first half inch of the tube? i get pretty persistent when it comes to diy, i may just well try that when my kits arrive.

The first half inch of the tube? If I understand you correctly, you picture the airline hanging inside the generator. This is not the case with the Hagen system. The cap screws on and there is a molded nipple on the outside of the cover that the airline fits onto. I suppose you could try using silicone or some such to have an airstone hang inside the generator, but I wouldn't know how well that would work. To try that I'd just make a 2 liter DIY setup and hook it up to the Hagen diffuser. Now that I've confused myself, did you get the entire kit or just the diffuser?
I've had one running for a couple of weeks on my 20gallon bowfront. After a few days, it seems to have stablilized and is doing well, my pH hovers at around 7. I had a problem with the reactor in the beginning, but after re-positioning the reactor closer to the bottom of the tank, the bubbles do become noticably smaler as they go through the reactor... perhaps it was just a coincidence?
Regardless, from the results I've seen, it is an effective system if you are not DIY inclined. As the others have said, there's no need to buy the refill packs, just put in your own yeast/sugar mixture.

ger, i ordered the entire kit.
no, i do not mean the end of the tube going into the generator; it's the other end that goes into the diffuser. i assume that the air tube just plugs into it? at any rate, i guess i'll just need to examine the diffuser first. maybe i'm way off base. one thing about mail ordering is the week-long wait...

I have used make-shift "bells" to collect the bubbles and hold them in an upside down water bottle with the top (neck and cap end) cut off.
I have also let the CO2 bubbles flow directly into the biowheeel intake. This makes for more noise from the filtration, but really seemed to dissolve the bubbles well. Not sure what the actual absorption rate was through the filter system, but the plants seemed to look healthier so I assume it worked at least halfway.

It actually works good. Yeah, it is a nicer form of a diy but much more efficient if you use youre own method of ingredients. The packets it comes. Hagen says to use 1 co2 system per every 10-20 gallons, use 2 after that, and i think use 3 for a 70 gallon tank. I have a 10 gallon tank and it works great.
