My Story
I set the tank up 10 weeks ago (My first tank and I've done a lot of studying online as well as visits to different pet stores). Started with just three fish and worked hard to get the Biological Filter working correctly. During this time we slowly added more fish till at 8 weeks we had all our fish listed but one Gourami and our levels were WELL within proper levels with never losing a fish.
My Mistake
I hate plastic tape on backgrounds and didn't want to empty my tank to install a homemade styrofoam formed one I've seen online. Then I came across a site about glueing rocks to plexiglass for the inside of your tank. In my brilliance I thought I'd just do this and have it clamped/pinned to the back of the tank and it would look great. I spent hours glueing with 100% silicone (suggested by the site I got the idea from) hundreds of rocks (Red granite) to the Plexi. I've finished 2 sections and decided to put one in while I finished the last piece. This was 60 hours ago. As of last night I have lost six of my fish and one snail (the ones with * next to their names). After a thorough search four of the fish and the snail are NO WHERE to be found. The other two were found missing heads and other body parts.
My Conclusion and Solution so far
I didn't research 100% Silicone (did not state it was safe for aquarium) ahead of time as it was suggested by the website. Unfortunately I now know it may contain arsenic or other harmful chemicals for curing. Now I do know. I'm assuming this is the trouble and killing off half my tank so far. I've cleaned my plants and tank walls and did a 50% water change and am at a loss at anything else I can do. My tank levels are all still well within proper readings. The last Gourami was added yesterday morning before I realized what was going on. He seems to be doing fine so far while most of the other fish seem to be livening up a little.
Sorry this is so long but I wanted you to have a complete background so I can hopefully save the rest of my tank.
