Is it hard to keep a nudibranch healthy in a SW tank? Are they destructive to any livestock I may have in a reef setting? My LFS has a couple of really neat ones for reasonable prices, but I need more info first. Thanks in advance for all info!
Nudibranches (Sea Slugs) eat 1 thing and only that 1 thing, and will not eat anything else (which is mostly rare types of sponges and corals, theres even 1 that will only eat Aiptasia). Which is why its hard to keep Sea Slugs, they will often starve to death.
Thanks, Gealcath. Sounds like these critters are better left to those with large, established tanks. They sure are beautiful creatures, though. Oh well
No, they are better left to the Oceans, there was a recent thread about a purple one just a day or two ago that talks about them a bit more. Hope this helps.
Thanks Mono, I read that thread, and I wonder why nudibranchs are even offered at LFSs considering that most of them, if not all, will die? How/why would a LFS sell such a product? What an unethical way to make a cheap buck.:shake:
sorry i don't have the scientific names down quite yet but the LFS here has something they call sea hares???? would that be a nudibranch?? its brown and looks like a sliding clump of brown algae? I thought about one down the road but not quite there yet. but if its goin to just die anyway then I'll pass.
Sea hares are usually herbivores. For example, Aplysia californica will eat macroalgae and Stylocheilus species will eat cyanobacteria. What kind of sea hare is it? About an inch or more like 6 inches?
