hardy fish

thanks for the observation hendrix:rolleyes: ...I guess my point is, when I first started my tank I unknowingly did a fishy cycle and it was horrible, fish died, I had all sorts of disease b/c I didn't QT and just replaced the dead. I was within a day of selling my tank and quiting and it suddenly finished the cycle. The process can be really discouraging, and its a shame to have someone give up the hobby for that reason. You can get the hardiest fish there is and it will not come away unaffected from a poorly managed cycling process, which is why I at least recommended to use fish you don't hope to keep for a long time.

bubblegum, its obviously up to you how you get your tank started, but IMO getting off to a good start, although it requires a bit of patience is well worth it . good luck

Cycling with fish is considered amatuerish and not recommended by anyone knowledgable about the fish hobby.

Don't do it. So much easier and faster to do it without fish.:duh:

Exception being if you use Bio-spira , but most people can't readily get it, and it's still not 100% reliable. Sometimes you get a bad bag, and you are stuck with dying fish and an endless "bucket parade" with 2 water changes a day...

Only reason people choose fishy cycle is thier own impatience at looking at an empty tank...period. No legit reason.

Why would anyone who is NOT an amateur try to cycle from scratch, though? Only amateurs will attempt to cycle from scratch. If you're an "expert", wouldn't you just used filter media from one of your other tanks, or go to the LFS and ask for some gravel? Give the guy a break, here. He's doing his best with what he has.
