Have a question about this cool little fish. I really want one to put one in my 209G tank but there is one minor issue. Size. In Scott Michaels book (Marine Fish) he lists Serranus tigrinus as getting 4 inches while on Fenners site wetwebmedia he lists they get a foot long. Does anyone which one is right? Thanks for any help you can provide.

A 12" harlequin in the wild would be pretty huge, but 4" in captivity is a little conservative. I'd plan for a good 7-8" in captivity over time...not a huge predator, but big enough to eat smaller fish easily.

I have never seen a Halequin Bass longer than about 5 inches, and I have seen many dozens over a lot of years diving and collecting in the Caribbean. Most adults are about 4 inches, measuring from the nose to the base of the tail fin. There does not seem to be that much variability in size among the basslets, unlike reef fish in other families. For example, most adult Queen Angels are about 8 to 10 inches Sl, but every now and then you see a giant.

Harlequins are small but very predatory fish, and should not be kept with anything much smaller than they are. They act like little groupers, and can swallow fish and shrimp-type inverts more than half their size. Like most predators, they tend to ignore fish that are established members of the aquarium community, tending to go after newly introduced fish. Until they get really hungry.

Thanks guys. agilis- my tank has some larger predators so no inverts and no small fish (Rectangular Trigger, Pair of Nigers, Clown Grouper, Lunare Wrasses, Zebra Moray and Snowflake Eel). I really like groupers (the dwarf ones) and wanted to get either a Harlequin or the White spotted for this tank. I am kinda leaning towards the white spotted since bigger adult size. I will get a Harlequin for one of my other tanks definetly. I also want a little Barred Serano Basslet that we have at our store right now.
