Has anyone....

ever put otto cats in with your cichlids? I was thinking of adding a few to deal with a little brown algea I have. Or is there a similiar catfish that would be a cleaner.

No on the Otocinclus with anything but the smallest dwarf cichlids. For an appropriate match-up between algae eaters and cichlids, tell us what kind of cichlids you have in mind.

You would have to say what kind of cichlids you're talking about. Angelfish? sure. Oscars? No.

I agree :D. Rift Lake cichlids are also another no.

Otos are compatible with Angels, apistos, discus, kribs, and other south american and west african dwarves.

Thanks, I was thinking of putting them with my group of labs and peacocks.
They are small but I would suppose the water perameters would be another consideration.

Agreed.

One thing to remember is that if you plan on keeping them with discus you will have to lower the tank temperature down a couple of notches though.

Otos cannot handle very warm water. IMHO I wouldn't put them in water above 84 degrees. They just aren't tough enough fish for the higher extremes of discus tanks.

Well...I'll just say that adult angels and discus are more than large enough to finish off an otocinclus, and leave it at that.

For the specific situation here, however, Labs and Peacocks are Rift Lake cichlids and the oto's wouldn't stand a chance in those water conditions.

For those kinds of cichlids, if you are determined to have an algae eater, look towards one of the larger plecos. They may be able to withstand the water conditions and tankmates.

On the other hand, why not just leave algae eaters out of that tank altogether? If algae forms on the rocks, it will only serve as the home for additional food for the cichlids, and if it forms on the glass, you can simply scrape it off.

Thanks for the confirmations...no ottos in with the cichlids. But as an aside I also have 2 ottos in a 29 (also among others) with 2 angels and an alls well.
I have in the 90 a few yellow labs, 4 lemon jakes, 2 johannis, a copidochromis jacksoni and 2 balas. All is quite peaceful except for the lemon jakes. One is VERY dominant and chases the others through the rocks. Any opinions on what a few more additions to the group that would be a bit differant but not overly aggressive.?
There is lots of hiding spots and open spaces.
