Have you thought of this?

Heya, I was just wondering if any of you have thought of building a windmill(or wind turnbine rather) for running something little like say your aquarium, or computer, or something else small like that? I am wanting to build one, and I have for sometime wondered how to go about building one that will allow me to run little things such as my aquarium, computer, TV, etc.. Anyone have information on building one?

yeah, my dad is all phsyced up about wanting one just for ornamental reasons out on the patio, but my dad builds things, never buys them, hes been engineering for like 30 years though, so dont get the idea they would look like crap. i was gunna bring one home from china for him, but we didnt have enough room in the container... anyways yeah some blueprints would be great as they are hard as to come by.....

Ah I know that's my problem. I would build one tomarrow if I could find a GOOD how-to. I only want one to power my aquarium pump/heater/lights, and tv/Satellite. But I cannot find a How-to! If anyone knows any good sites with how-to's please share!

I had this idea before. I was watching a show called "How it's Made" on the science channel and they were showing how they make wind powered generators. It looks like a propeller on a car alternator, but it would be very hard to make. So I thought about buying one, it will produce up to 500w of power.

I am almost tempted to save money to buy one just because of the fact I cannot find any good how-to's, and it's just easier in a sense than getting all the stuff rounded up. 500w, hmm. I definitely would love one of them for Christmas!

I would think you could do it with a big altenator that would be turned by the fan attached by a belt and then have the altenator charge a seires of batteries. Then just get a DC to AC converter and your all set. I dont see why something for the home should be more difficult than that.

Yes, but I am still in the air on finding a good altenator that will be easily turned by wind. I was considering a car altenator, but I don't know if one from something like a geo metro would be fairy easily turned by wind, or not.

The way I saw it was built would still be difficult. The prop has to be good quality and connected to the alternator, which it's self has to be specially weather proofed to withstand the elements. Then it has to be specially connected to swivel without stressing wires. They used some kind of wireless connection that rotates with wind direction changes. Then they have a kind of braking system that slows the prop if the wind speed gets too high. Im not saying that it cannot be done, just that it would be an undertaking. Thats why I considered just buying one, but it would cost a few clams.
