I'm feeling very down that I have yet another illness to deal with. I've had the new fish in the new tank about two weeks. I had to treat for ick with in the first couple of days but lost the fish anyway. Now it appears one of them may have internal parasites. While all $40 worth of fish looked happy and healthy the day I bought them, that doesnt seem to be the case. I have dealt with verious illnesses in the old tank too. Seems there may not be a healthy lfs in my area as I have bought from several different stores, but there always seems to be something wrong that I don't see in the store. True, I do not have an isolation tank for when I get new fish, but at this point, a sick fish is a sick fish where ever it dies, it is still a dead fish and a sad me. I feel as though I should just treat for all manner of parasites/fungus as soon as I arrive home. How do I get a healthy fish and how do I keep it that way?

oh, and are some meds more effective than others? I have enough Jungle Parasite Clear Tank Buddies for one treatment. I just dont see how I can get to the lfs today and buy anything else, but I wonder how good Tank buddies are as I have buried a lot of fish. But the fish I treated with NoxIch also died. And I really do not have time to go to the lfs tomorrow either, but I guess I have no choice. The question is Can I treat with Tank buddies today and then something else, or not? Should I wait until I get something better, or should I start with Tank Buddies and finish with Tank Buddies? AND, this tank is 37 gallons, and I am supposed to add 1 TB per 10 gallons....can I do 3 1/2?

I need a live in fish doctor.

Signs of a Healthy Fish:

Active, not just staying at the bottom (Warning: it is normal for some fish to stay at the bottom, for these fish disregard this rule)

Bright Eyes

Clear Skin

Erect fins

Ask the dealer to see the fish eat

Stick your hand near the tank, see if the fish react.

Sorry about your losses,
Freddy

Dear acocacolagirl

Did you changing the water weekly?
Did you test the water PH , amonia,......?

Ahmad

yes, yes.
I change the water regularly. And my water perameters are good. So I am starting to feel it is just my luck. And my fish are my place to relax and do something I love...but it keeps getting really stressful with sick fish every other week.

Dear acocacolagirl

Is it possible for you to explain the most disease in slices to us which he hit the fish and the epistyles which became plain on her.
You said that the disease is internal. Do you produce which of a swelling on a body of the fish.

Ahmad

I don't think the tank buddies stuff is the best med. out there, but I don't know of a good one to recommend off hand either :o . If you can get a good suggestion for a quality med. I would hold off a day or two and treat with that once you get it. It would be worse to put in a couple of different meds. than to just wait a day or two and treat with one.

What has led you to the internal parasites diagnosis? To clear up an illness it is really important to be sure you are treating the correct problem.

Can you list what your water parameters are? It always helps to know those things:)

I think I can offer some suggestions:

Have you ever tried ordering your fish on line? Places like http://www.LiveAquaria.com have awesome fish and they ship overnight Fed Ex. I've ordered fish and plants from them a few times and have never gotten a diseased fish or bad plant. I had one DOA shrimp and one "damaged" guppy that probably got banged around a bit too much. He recovered fully and was a beautiful little guy.

I've had several knowledgable people recommned http://www.thatfishshop.com as a great place as well. Also http://www.alloddballaquatics.com has a great reputation.

As for medications -- salt is usually my first line of treatment. For further treatment I keep the following in my fish meds cabinet:

For Parasites:
Maracide Concentrate (Various Parasites)
Super Ick Cure (Ich)
PraziPro (Flukes, Tapeworm, Flatworm, Turbellarians)

Fungus
Malachite Green
APPLUS+ Anti-Fungus
Furan- 2

Misc. Medications, Preventatives and Emergency Use
Tetracyline (Dropsy, Popeye, Ulcers, Sores, Open Wounds)
Methylene Blue

Some of those medications are only for use in the hospital tank as they will kill all the bacteria and plants, others are safe for the main tanks.

In this perticular case, one gill is swollen and I can see the pink of the lower underside.

Lastweek, it was ick - or not as ichnox seemed not to work although I think it was impoving.

The other tank had fish with some sort of soft whiteish/yellowish puff on its head.

Before that it was a very skinny, suddenly shy fish.

The last six months has been one thing after another. I have tried not to use any of the same equipment between tanks without first washing with water and ammonia.

My water perameters for both tank are at or about:
Temp 75 - 78*F
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 10 - 20
Ph 7 - 7.5
I haven't tested Kh in a while. But Kh was low in the past in the new tank that has the current problem (fish with swollen gill) but I added something to correct it. This is a new tank, all the fish in it came from the same store at the same time.
