What's the rule of thumb for Watts/gallon for a heater?

This is assuming a typical community FW plant/fish aquarium. Winter indoor day temps will be 68F and the thermostat will set back to about 62F at night.

For filtration, is there a rule of thumb for gph for a tank of so many gallons? How many turnovers per hour is recommended?

Depending on your room temp and size of tank and whether it is covered or not...3-5 watts per gal. On large tanks, I split the total need between two heaters.

I hit 10 times tank volume for hourly turn over and always cut the advertised flow in half of any filter.

Roughly the same here, What size tank are you referring to ?......:)

I always figure about 5 watts per gallon then I try to find a heater about the right size. If you had a 29 gallon tank which actually holds about 26 gallons there are no 130 watt heaters so you choose either a 100 or a 150. The 5 watts per gallon is usually recommended for a 10 degree difference between room temperature and tank temperature so if you run your tanks hot or the room cold you will want to choose a heater with more capacity.
