Hello Everyone, This is my first post and I have a Question.

I just purchased 1 Oranda and 2 Fantail Fancy Goldfish for my 15 Gal Tank. I have Heater but LFS sales person told me that remove the heater, coz Goldfish don't need Heater, is this true? Heater is still in the tank, I just unplug it for now. So what suggestion do you guys have? and if you guys say keep the heater on, then what temp should I keep it on?

P.S. Yes, 15 Gal tank is temporary. I'll be getting 55 Gal tank soon.

Sorry, I searched on this forum for this, but didn't get any post regarding this.

Thanks...........

Leave it out. Goldfish can withstand a bit of heat (my unheated tank peaks around 82F in the summer), but it tends to be less healthy for them in the long term.

Goldfish prefer temperatures in the 60 to lower or mid 70s although they have a fairly wide tolerance of temperatures- as long as the room temperature stays above 60 and doesn't get too hot- I don't think you need to worry.

I kept them in ponds back in England and the water would frequently freeze over for days at a time and they lived.

When the water gets somewhere in the mid 50s they start to prepare themselves for winter and stop eating as much... if you're indoors you don't need to worry- it won't get that low. You'd be more concerned about the room being too hot.

I've had Comets indoors. I did have a heater in their tank. It was set at 75. The room they were in got very cold in the winter. Temps went down to 58 degrees F.
And I felt it was better to have the water temp. stable so that fluctuations in the room and water temperature in summer, winter, spring and fall weren't too drastic.

I imagine it depends on where you live. The outdoor temps here are like a roller coaster.

Of course it always pays to do more research on the care of the type of fish you have for more opinions.

I think fancies prefer the low 70's. I agree- having a heater around for potential ich is a good idea!

Somer is correct. Fancy ones are a little more picky. I'd not go below 70 degrees with orandas. Fantails can withstand the colder temperature though. 72-76 degrees is just right.

I have a heater in my goldies tank. but it is set low and it keeps it at around 73 degrees.
