I have an appx 20 Gal "tote" that was bought at Kmart and used as an outdoor pond on my back porch for the summer. I am in the process of moving it indoors now. Is it safe to put a 50W heater in there for the winter, or will the heater melt the plastic floor of the container? I have a little pebble sized gravel on the bottom. Any experiences?

I keep a submersible heater in a homemade sump (made of the same material) without problem. The heater has a rubber tip-guard and rubberized relief at the top as well, the barrel never contacts the plastic.

Not really sure what fish I will put in there yet. The room is around 70, but it will be setting on a concrete floor near the door that accesses the attached, unheated, uninsulated garage. I think I need a heater.

If you are worried about the heater contacting the floor of the tub, maybe just setting it on a brick would solve the potential problem...
