We noticed our fish were acting weird, so we checked the temp in our tank (on of our routines LOL). It was at 85 degrees! :thud: We had the temp set at 79. It's been going up and down yesterday, so I'm guessing we'll be getting a new heater today...the bad part is that the heater we only got about 3 months ago with our 29 gallon kit :( Last night we unplugged it so it didn't fry our fish ... the temp is now down to 81

Just wondering if you had a question or if you were just letting us know what has happened? If this is just for information you can post this info in the "Members Fish Photo and Tank Specs" area. Just create a new topic with your username and add all the info you want about your tank.

Hope, I've found that the cheap-o heaters (like the ones that come in aquarium kits) tend to be more prone to those sort of things. Defects like getting stuck on, or not calibrated properly so the temperature you set it at is not where it shuts off.

The brand of heaters I've heard the best reviews on are the Visi-Therm Stealth line. I'm going to replace all my tanks with those probably in the next week :)
They keep tank temp totally stable, without even a degree of fluctuation. The only "complaint" is that they don't have a light to indicate when they're on or off. But that's where the "Stealth" part comes in, huh? :D Also, the all plastic body prevents it from getting really hot, as do the glass heaters.

Sorry..yeah I forgot to add the question .... Anyone have any suggestions for a good brand of heater?

see my suggestion above. you can also search this forum for "heaters". The Stealth is my personal choice, even over the others made by Visi-Therm, which are usually made of Pyrex, because of the unbreakable and even heating plastic housing.

I've heard Jager recommended quite a bit, too, but I had one of those that cracked. It started leaking electricity and gave me a big shock, ow! This was in a saltwater tank, though. Still, even in FW that doesn't conduct electricity as well, I would think it's probably not appreciated by your fish :D

plah831 already had a suggestion ;).

I had the same problem as you had. This was also a heater that came with a kit. I'll buy one of those Visi-Therm ones. They go for something between $17-20 online and are even cheaper than the crappy All-Glass one that I have at the moment.

This is what we have in our 75 gallon cichlid tank and have been very happy with it - the temp has only fluctuated a degree - never more. We actually bought it because it was the cheapest, but glad to know it's also getting good reviews! Thanks!

I know LOL...I was just letting everyone know that I had meant to post a question, but got sidetracked :o
no worries! :)
That's cool that the Stealth happened to be the cheapest where you got it. In my catalogues, it costs pretty much the same as the others, but the reviews are much much better.
