i am changing my heater, do i just replace old one and put in new one right away or is there a special procedure?

Don't forget to follow the directions. Let the new one sit at least 15 minutes in the tank before turning it on. i totally agree.... get the best one you can . Many years ago, i returned from work to a tank of boiled fish, some of which I had had for 8 years.. it was horrible!
 
since this tread is a day old, it may not be relevent, but its useful to calibrate your new thermometer with the old one in the tank.... turn the new ones temp knob until the light flickers on and off and you probably have the new one set.

but constant maintenence is the best bet for the first few days
