just got myself a new 10 gallon tank. cycled it for 48 hours added the liquid to take out the chlorine and chloramine. currently i own one zebra fish and a crayfish ive had for a while now. he just hides so he'll be fine with other fish i believe. what fish do you recommend i stock in this 10 gallon enclosure? looking for something with lots of color, like neon tetras. also they need to get along. thanks guys!

i was going to make it a small tank for cichlids but ive recently changed my mind and saved the cichlids for a 55 gallon tank one day.

first - tanks will take several weeks to cycle, which is when you add ammonia to the water (either by actually using ammonia in a fishless cycle, or by using start-up fish, which is not recommended). in the presence of ammonia, bacteria will grow that change the ammonia into nitrates, then more bacteria will grow that change the nitrates into nitrites, which are harmless for your fish. although i may have gotten nitrates and nitrites mixed up. doesn't matter right now.

you should decide which option you want to use, both will take about the same length of time, though going fishless might be faster. the difference is that you're not subjecting any fish to ammonia poisoning in order to help you on your way to better more exciting fish. for more ideas just do a search for "cycle" and don't be afraid to read.

once that is coming to a close, we can talk about stocking again.

3-6 weeks.

i know, it's terrible to sit there and look at an empty tank for that long, but doing it right will save you a lot of money and frustration in the long run.

other people know more about stocking than i do, which is obvious from what i have. someone will come and help with that.

do you have test kits for amonia and nitrite? At the very least you need those ASAP (like yesterday :D ). Since you already have a fish in there, I would keep an eye on those 2 levels and if they are above 0 you need to do water changes to get them there. Once the tank is cycled in a few weeks, I would slowly add a fish or 2 a week. Maybe just 3 or 4 more zebras (they like company), and perhaps a couple of corys? Also, be aware that the zebra will become dinner if the crayfish can catch it

BARBS OR CORY CATS WOULD LOOK NICE :dance2:

I think most barbs get too big/active for a 10g. Arowana is a joke in case you don't know, they get HUGE

dont get mad at me but i personally dont cycle tanks what i do is fill it with water then 2 days later put some goldfish in there then after a week if they are fine i put them in a pond then put fish in
