Hello All,

I'm just setting up a system after a 25 year absence from the hobby. I just plugged in the lighting for my 12 gallon Aquapod and noticed that the fan runs slowly and somewhat noisely. If I tilt the hood up the fan speeds up eventually reaching full speed when the hood is a 90 degrees from horizontal. Is this normal?

I'm ready to add my Flourite and gravel, hopefully I don't have to exchange my pod.

Thanks

I've had computer fans fail like this. I'm waiting for a definitive response about the fan speed before filling my tank. I've got my substrate and 12 gallons of DeInoized water ready. Getting impatient, maybe I should just proceed - I probably can exchange the hood only if it proves to be a problem.

my 24G Aquapod does the same thing. I figured it had to do with either condensation falling onto the fan when the cover was tipped, or maybe the cover and fan surround twisting a bit.

necigrad,

I do think that our hoods are malfunctioning. I'll check with my LFS and post the outcome. Clearly, there is some problem with the bearing in the fan.

How is your tank doing? I do think that a slow fan and it's diminished capacity will contribute to your heat problem. I'm going to reread your thread to guide my next steps.

Thanks,

My tank is cycles, though infested with snails and has algae, both of which I will be working on. It doens't overheat at all, though I'm sure I'll have some overheating (and I'm hoping minor) during the summer if/when the AC can't keep up 100%. Since the fan sounds perfectly fine except when the hood is lifted I don't think there is a problem.

I need to retract my statement. I'm now noticing this as well when not lifting the hood. The fan is dying. I'm going to have to see what they will do for warranty on Friday, or maybe next week. I also noticed that there's a hole for a second fan, but it's not included (I thought there was two).

I tried exchanging my hood at the LFS, but was told that "the manufacturer requires an inspection" first. So they disassembled the hood and it appeared that one of many unsecured wires may have been rubbing on the fan. Some masking tape was applied and the hood was presented to me to take back home. Of course this did not remedy the malfunction. I will try again, it's not something to get too worked up over as it seems to be a standard computer fan.

The problem fan was exchanged by Current Design under warrantee through my local fish store. I just tried it out and my problem is solved - quiet operation with a now measurable air flow from the discharge vent.

The fan specs. are 60mm x 60mm x 15mm, 15cfm, 12VDC. I included this info. because I think adding a second fan would be benificial. The hood design allows airflow to short circuit the bulb compartment through the additional fan vent. Two fans installed to discharge would pull a very significant amount of air through the top bulb vents, then past the ballasts and moon light power supply, finally discharged by the twin fans.

Thanks,
