Hi all i'm new to this thread .
Well i guess ill start from the beginning of my fish tank experiance.
my first tank i my neighbor was going to throw away a fish tank and i thought it would be cool to have a fish tank so instead of it being garbage i took it little to my knowledge along with the fish tank i got 10 fish . so i looked thim up and found they where pink convict cichlid's. so i cleaned the tank and set it all up . quick a few months down the road i got to thinking one of my fish started to act weird i thought maybe babies on the way r dieing i asked a guy who worked at pet smart about it and he said that fish would probably not have babies in my fish tank so i thought it was dieing but o no a little while latter i had hundreds of babies it was a cloud of little pink things lol . well one thin led to another and i had to get another tank i took all but the parents and babies out of my original tank and put thim into a new tank now im up to 2 tanks one is a 30 gallons with babies and parents and a 25 gallon with 8 other fish . ok so the babies grow up and some sadly to say die off . now im left with umm ruff count 27 fish all together in 2 diff tanks . by this time i have realy gotten into aquariums and fish and its become a hobby for me . well yesterday suprisingly enough i was driving down the street and happend to see a man pulling a big fish tank out of his garage and bringing it to the trash so i stoped and asked him about it . he said i could have it and helped me loud it . after finaly getting it home and convincing my girlfriend to let me put the new adition into our apartment . the tank was very nasty whin i got it i took it to a car wash to clean it lol . well i got it all clean and out in its a very nice 55 gallon with a nice black stand and a top that fits on it with a big hinging door the only thing wrong with it was the blue led lights that the man had put in the top so for now until i can afford new led lights i have ataches a light from my 30 gallons to put the big tank in i had to get rid of the 2 smaller tanks thats the only way the woman would have it lol . it has a rena filstar xp3 i cleaned and replaced the filters in and it works perfectly . ok so last night i filled the tank and set it all up it has a few things in the bottom i will re decorate whin i have more money to do so . no plants as of yet im not sure weather to do fake or real plants . and today i put in my fish so all 26-27 (i will get a better count ) are in the same tank together at ferst they stayed to the bottom but now there swiming around exploring the new land and new space so far so good the tank seems to be working find. also the fish are mixed female and male of course they range from about 4 1/2 inches to 1/2 inch there are 4 of the larger size and thin the siezes continue to go down from there . now a few questions.

i call my fish the fish mafia .
i put a plecostomus in my org 30 gallon and they killed him sadly i had now idea they would . i need to no a good way to help keep the tank clean is there some kinda of feeder fish i can put in my tank or something i can do help with this would be nice .

also do i have to many inches of fish for gallons of water i dont realy no or do i have to many fish in one tank to have a good clean enviroment.

should i put live or fake plants in ?

i read something about fish disease about thim smashing into the bottom of the tank my big fish kinda do that they skim there sides on the bottom is this something pink convict cichlids do or should i be alarmed by this action.

how do i no if im over feeding i have so many mouths to feed i dont want to under feed and i dont want to over feed eather.

i think thats all for now any help would be nice ? im sure ill be posting more with more questions and comments .

also ill be posting pictures probably tom night or so of my new aquarium and my fishies dunno if anyone would like to see but im proud and going to shwo thim off anyway lol

thanks for the help in advance

:welcome: to AC.

The inch of fish per gallon rule is rubbish. I wouldn't add any more fish 27 convicts in one 55g is already way over stocked, i would try to thin out your stock a bit. Be aware that cons' breed like rabbits so you are going to need a plan what to do with your future fry or you will become over run with them.
Feed them as much as they will eat in two min's and remove any leftover food.
Looking forward to seeing some pics :)

how much thining do u think i should do i was thinking i had to many and for future fry to come i was thinking about giving thim to local pet stores . and ill certanly take the pics tom after i get off of work

A breeding pair of convicts should have their own tank really.
I would check with your lfs they may not take your fry in, the lfs around here won't touch convict fry

Convicts are known for their breeding habits. They are prolific!! You will constantly have the problem of them overpopulating your tank. Many keep convicts to provide live andhealthy feeders for their larger cichlids and turtles. I would definately see if your LFS can take alot of them. If you are US, you could also place an ad on craigslist for free convicts and also list them as free feeder fish. If it were me, I would be tempted to get rid of them all and pick a different stocking for your new tank. It might be difficult to add other types of fish with the convicts as you are having them breed so frequently and they become aggressive. I hope that this helps and best of luck with your tank.

the best option would probably be to sell them as feeders. seems mean i know, but other fish gotta eat too.

lol nah doesnt seem mean to me but i have the problem of a g/f and there breeding isnt realy a problem because they have only bred once lol beleave me if it was up to me i would take all but maybe 3 of the large pink cons out and put in a few diff cons that i have found my local pet store has a very pritty blue con cichlid that i have been looking at he is 7 in so i dont no if i would have problems with him killing the pink cons. like i said before this is my first big tank . in a little while ill be taking and posting some pics on this forum . also is there any type of tank cleaning fish i could possible add in with my pink cons and maybe some kinda eil that they wouldnt kill or that wouldnt kill thim . becuase realy to be honest i realy like my pink cons. and dont want anything to happen to thim .
