HAI!
1st post here, i was recomended here by a petco guy..

ive wanted an aquarium for a long time, and i just moved into a bigger room(sister moved out, W00T), so i decided to buy a fishtank
i saved my allowance and bought one of those tank kit things for like...70 bucks?
its a 10gal with all the stuff(filter, 10gal glass tank, thermometer, etc)
waited a day to prime the filters and let the water cycle go n stuff, put in the tap water cleaner junk
and i went to buy 3 fish to start my cycle so the ammonium spikes wont be too high
i bought two, a black ghostknife and a bamboo shrimp...bad combo?
i figured the shrimp was big enough to defend itself and id blend in n stuff... i know that 1inch of fish per 1 gal, so i have a 30gal wating for the ghost knife
but back to the shrimp, thy hang out n stuff and they dont fight, but my other concern is my bamboo shrimp is turning red? why? is he sick? he was a very dark ugly brown when i bought him, and now he has a red tint

heres a pic of the 2 chillin
sorry if its too big, i was just worried and i rushed to throw this up on, ill read the rules later, sorry :(

turned on the lights so you could see them, from what ive seen, they like it dark

i also knet the ghost knife was a carnivorous fish, i feed him ham haha since my parents wont tak eme out to get food for him, bu tlike i said, i thought the shrimp was big enough to defend itself

1st- I like the piece of lava rock you bought. Good taste.

2nd-The Black Ghost (BKG) is really cool looking, but unfortunately grows around 20''.
You need something to the tune of 125 gallons to keep one.

3rd-The Bamboo shrimp is also cool. However, in a newly established tank it has
nothing to feed on. See the fans? It takes particles up from the water which
aren't there before the tank has been up and running for a while. Invertebrates
are also very sensitive to ammonia, which will be spiking soon.

4th-You can do a fishless cycle.

5th-The one inch per gallon rule is complete garbage. Please never, ever follow it.
A one foot oscar in a 12 gallon tank would be almost as large as the tank itself!

6th-Do you have a good set of liquid test kits?

7th-There is a ton of stuff you can do with a ten gallon tank. Don't despair!

And welcome to fishkeeping! It's such an awesome hobby.

Vamp covered most of what I was going to cover, so I'll leave it with this...

:welcome: to AC!

P.S.- I love that you were referred here from Petco!

k, bought a 125gal, i still have a bit of time to get filters, decor ets set up, so ill buy more when i can afford it
i went back to petco to buy food and a test kit, didnt have enough for a kit so didnt bother with it, ill get it this weekend, but i did buy a mossball thing...think that would help with the good bacteria the shrimp eats? its basicly just a big ball fo moss that floats in tanks that they had in all the tanks, all the shrimp were chillin on it at the store
and for the fishless cycle, kinda too late but i will do it my next tank
ill get it set up like...3 weeks in advance

thx soo much for the help

Cool, take pictures of the 125 tank. A bamboo shrimp needs to be in an established tank to feed off of the bacteria and small living stuffs, or feed it powdered fish food. Bamboo Shrimp should'nt be eating food off of anything, the way they should eat food is by filtering the water for small particles of food through their "fans" on their claws.

wait wait wait wait...you bought a 125 just like that? jeez lol only if i could do that...also one thing i noticed that you said parents that means under 18 that means how do you afford and convince you parents to let you buy a 125 lol

That's what I was thinking. 10 gallon tank to a 125 gallon in one day.
Sounds kind of fishy to me. This is why I asked for pictures.
