A kind neighbor just gave me an old 50gal tank with all the $$ equipment.
Problem is tank has black dried algae along the corners, most of it on top of the glue, some under the edge of it. The tank has been empty for about six weeks.
How do I safely clean it?

Maybe you could try soaking the stuff enough for it to rehydrate and loosen up enough to scrub off with a paper towel or a clean piece of filter sponge.

It's the most gentle solution I can think of . . . 50 gallons is a heck of a soak though. But nothing says you can't set it up where you want it to soak and the be a few water changes and some filtration away from completely setting up.

A couple of tools come to mind. First is a single edged razor blade for any that's on the glass. DO NOT go near the silicone sealant with the blade. I agree with the idea of soaking it (perhaps by just filling the tank) and then I've had some luck with a soft toothbrush on the silicone seal.
