I was doing a water change on my tank and put 15 mL instead of juts 5 - being 3 times too much. And then my bf just put regular tap water into the tank with no conditioner because he said it would all mix up. Ugh. Did I just kill my fish? They have 3 times the normal amount of conditioner and regular tap water dumped into the tank.

Sorry, but I have to ask the obvious...are your fish dead?

But in all seriousness, most conditioners have a huge "grace" range before OD'ing becomes a problem. I believe Prime, for example, can be dosed up to 5x as much before affecting fish, but I might be getting that number from somewhere else...

Either way nothing a water change can't fix. Better safe than sorry...but still add the conditioner for the second change.

What conditioner?

You will be fine!! The extra conditioner you put in your water will dechlorinate the water your bf put. I'm assuming you are using a bucket, and you put 1 bucket and your bf put 2 buckets of tapwater.

Yes, that's correct. I measured up to the 3 gallon mark and put 15 mL of conditioner instead of just 5. Then the bf went and dumped 4 more gallons of regular tap water and now I'm freaking out. Ugh. I feel like such a bad fish caretaker.

Also, are you basing the 3x based off of the amount you added or the full volume of the tank? Do you add water directly to the tank or mix it first?

I wanted to mix it first, and it's supposed to be 5 mL for 10 gallons. I put 15 mL in 3 gallons and then the bf put 4 more gallons of regular tap water straight into the tank. So technically it's more than 3 times the amount because I used 15 mL for 7 gallons and it should have been less than 5 mL.
