help getting a new tank today

Hi -

I need some help. I am getting a 2.5 gallon mini bow tank today for my bettas. How do I cycle this tank and how long should it take to do? I have read about fishless cycles but it just confuses me. Can anyone explainin simple English?

Nikki it takes about 6 weeks to completely cycle a new tank.

I think the easyiest way for your case is to put the betta in the tank. Feed it a little bit once every other day until it cycles. Betta's are heardy fish and it shouldn't have a problem. Oh, be ready to do water changes every 1-3 days if ammonia or nitrites get above .25 ppm. Water changes should be easy in a 2.5 gallon tank.

Thank you for your advice. The guy at the fish store told me to put some cycle in the tank also. I did that and le the tank run a few days. Now this morning betty my female betta is very happy in her new tank. I am watching the Ammonia and ready to do changes.
Next I need to get a bigger tank for my male betta.
