Help! Gold Nugget with a whitish spot

WHOA! Do not go dumping meds in a tank with a gold nugget for that sort of a spot. The odds are good it's either a wear spot from wedging under decor (that IS the high spot on his back) or he's burned it a little on your heater while desperately searching for some cover. It's a common problem and definitely not something you want to just treat indiscriminately. Most ich meds severely affect your filtration bacteria. Dosing them for anything but what they're designed for is just taking a huge risk, especially with a fish that can be extremely sensitive to ammonia or nitrite.

If he was mine, I'd net him and carefully swab a little bit of iodine on the injury. That will kill any bacteria and give his system a chance to heal it, without risking your water quality. It's how I have treated dozens of pleco injuries, up to and including after removing part of a fin to rid a fish of a large tumor. It works great and is way less traumatic in the long run. Pimafix and Melafix won't hurt anything, but probably aren't necessary. Keep an eye on the spot. If it grows or looks inflammed then you'll need to treat him with a broad spectrum antibiotic to treat the secondary bacterial infection, but the odds are good it won't require that, if the fish is healthy in the first place.

Barbie... thanks for your advise. I decided against meds. I actually took the picture I had of him and showed to my lfs, and they agreed that it looks more like a scrape than an infection. I did a quick water change to make sure that my tank is super clean. I bought a bottle of iodine, but how do I use it? Can you pls let me know? I love my nugget and I am paranoid of losing him... lol!

Thanks!

can't you catch him in the net, keeping him in a small bucket of water and get a cotton bud soaked with iodine and just touch the spot all over with it?

Thanks! I just did it. The iodine I got was stain free. I used a little cotton swab stick, dipped it in iodine, got a hold of nugget and very gently dabbed right on the white spot and no where else. Then I put him back in the tank. Hopefully that will help him heal faster. I am sure I stressed him out big time by catching him and dabbing his wound, but it is for his best.

I did turn out all the lights after I put him back in tank, so hopefully that will ease him a little bit.

So do I need to do this again or is one little dab good enough? Before doing this, I did check him out again and he has not developed any other spots, and the one did not grow or change either.

Thanks to all for your help. I really appreciate it.

Update

I just wanted to post a quick update on Nugget. After I followed advice above with the iodine, the spot did not change much. In fact it started looking a little more raised. I kept my water super clean with water changes and gave it a few more days and some patience. Earlier today, it looked like the whitish spot was floating around on his back. Then finally this afternoon, it must have fallen off because his skin/scale looks all better and is almost close to his original color!! I am so happy and excited. Thank you everyone who helped me out through this, I really appreciate it!!

Congratulations...I'm glad the iodone worked for you!

I was going to say...my sailfin used to get this all the time, on that exact spot no less. I definitely agree with Barbie that it's from digging into places he can get his head but not much else lol. The first time I saw it (it was a very light spot) on my sailfin I freaked, then decided to hold off on treatment for 48hrs. By that time it was definitely reduced so I left it be. Two days later I saw him trying to wedge his 7" long, 1.5" high body into a half inch crevice between the driftwood and substrate. He'd wiggle his head and thrash his body then stop...rest, and do it again. By the time he was done he'd wallowed out a spot that he could almost fit into sideways, and that was that. I took it as a sign, dug out some more hidey holes for him myself, and the behavior has completely stopped =).

You can almost see the scrape in this picture:

Anyhow, just wanted to add my little bit in there in case the problem reoccurs!
