OK I am in Houston and about ready to experience my third and worst hurricane ever! I have 14 fish tanks and need to keep these going. I have batteries and battery operated airators. I will be doing a huge cleaning tonight and tomorrow with no feeding.

I have a generator too. my question is this: HOW MUCH HYDROGEN PEROXIDE PER GALLON SHOULD I USE IF I HAVE TO AND IS THIS ADVISABLE FOR OXYGEN PRODUCTION???

Thank you very much for your help! Please pray for us! 200,000 people from New Orleans are here too. Pray for safely for everyone!

Hi, Mustang Sally! I'm assuming you're staying and not evacuating? I'm about 60 mi. N of Houston and you should see what a madhouse our Wal-Mart was today. All of the bottled water was gone! I should think that if you have battery-powered aerators you should be fine(I don't even have those, so I'm hoping we don't lose power all the way up here, although we hear that we could). I don't know anything about the peroxide. I'd personally be scared to use it myself. Good luck and we'll be praying for you.

God bless both of you guys and your families.I sure hope the storm disipates before it makes landfall. As for the hydrogen peroxide question,I'm sorry i can't help with that, but i can say a prayer.

Hi Sally, sorry to hear about what you are going through, I will be praying for you and your fish.

Clayt101 just wrote about what he went through in New Orleans with his tanks. Here is the thread. Perhaps you could PM him for info on the subject.

1-2 teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide can be used. Make sure to mix it in with some water AWAY from any fish (if you can net them off, add the peroxide, then remove the net and stir, it will be better. I'd use this as an absolute last resort, since hydrogen peroxide will not be friendly to anything in the tank. Stirring the tank, top to bottom with a ladle, will be better for the fish.

Oh, and if it gets bad, please, do leave. The tanks are not worth your health and safety!

good luck to you two and family and friends! ...I as well know nothing about the peroxide, but i went through a week long outage with my tanks because of a winter storm, and battery powered helped alot, since you have a generater, you should fair well, just don't forget extra fuel, hopefully you wont need it, blankets to cover tanks, help with temps, and keep debri from cracking tanks, if you are sure your not gonna get water, ie , to far inland ,,,maybe set the tanks down, incase the winds get pretty bad, limbs are viscious! ..good luck to you again, and my prayers are with you!

I will definately be praying for you. My family is scattered from Galveston to CollegeStation/Bryan, Dallas and Amarillo. I think my Aunt, Uncle and cousins are leaving Galveston for Dallas.

Most of all, take care of you and your family's safety first.

Thank you very much for the suggestions and prayers! I have cleaned all 14 tanks and everyone seems fine. We have boarded up as well. Now I just gotta stake the trees. I think now we will get the cleaner side of the storm so not as bad, I guess.... I feel bad for all the people stuck out on the freeways now. Yipes! I have never been in a traffic jam like that one!

My husband had to work in Galveston yesterday. He left Galveston this morning and he's still stuck in traffic. It's really unbelievable. All of the major hiways have been changed so that everyone is going one way. Don't know if that makes sense. For example, I-10 and I-45 (both sides) are now out-going. You cannot go east or south on the roads at all. It's amazing, I've never seen such a thing before. People are running out of gas on the freeway or getting heat exhaustion from the heat (the high was 101 today). Houston is the third largest city in the U.S. (only L.A. and NYC are bigger), imagine how many people are trying to leave right now.
