That is an Oscar and looks like it has some feeder goldfish in the tank with it.

ok first let me say that i asked b/c the previous owner was telling me that he was a african cichlid. I took him b/c they were just going to let him die. the tank that he was in is absolutley filthy thats why he is in the smaller tank, therefor no need for the comment about the size of the tank. also i went to the lfs and they were the ones who told me to put all the feeder fish in there i didn't come up with that on my own. I was just trying to find out what he was so i wasn't misinformed, but thank you to those who just answered the question w/o the remarks.

calm down i dont think it was meant that way..........ive read quite a few posts from roan and have yet to see an attitude problem.i think it was simply a matter of trying to help you take care of the fish properly.oscars are probably the most popular fish there is and if you cant identify that you probably dont have much experiance with tropical fish. so it would seem you need all the opinions you can get, relax the people on here are some of the best.

They are cichlids but they are from South America for the most part. You may want to watch him for disease since he was in a bad environment and you obviously put him into a better one. Sometimes the shock can cause health problems (It is like taking someone from the smog infested city of Los Angeles and moving them into the country, they can't handle the clean environment). The feeder fish is not a bad thing, Most people keep them in a separate tank and feed them one at a time, being that I am sure you are short on tanks (since this is a rescue) it should be fine and he should eat them as he gets hungry. I personally would hold him in that tank as a quarantine situation to make sure he acclimates to the clean water and then prepare his new home. Good luck with him, it is good to know what you have and how to care for him so that you minimize the mistakes made (and we all make mistakes.... trust me I know).

Actually, it was a matter of the fact that she did not state that the tank was hers or what the situation was.

I figured she just pulled it off the net and wanted to know what it was. Ergo, since she didn't know what it was, then she wouldn't know the tank was too small for the Oscar or that the feeder fish were too many (goldfish don't make good feeders, too).

All good?

oh yes we are fine and i thought i was calm i didn't say anything in a mean way. oh and by the way i have his previous home which is a 48 g corner hex also but like i said its filthy so its gonna take alot of elbow grease to get that one clean. i hope to have it running in about 2 weeks. what would be better feeder fish for him? also i noticed his fins don't look to nice is there anything i could use to help repair them? do they molt?

An oscar in a 48g tank is fully stocked and probably overstocked. A gravel vac would be the only bottom feeder you could get for him.
