I bought some java moss recently, but it is almost completely brown. I currently have it in a 1-gallon container of cold filtered water near my windowsill. I'm worried that placing it in my tank will cause an ammonia spike. is there anything I can do to save the moss or grow more from it? should I pick off the green parts and place it in my aquarium?

Your water maybe too cold. Attach it to something before putting into your aquarium. It should not cause a spike.

How much light does it get? How cold is the water?

I'm pretty sure my java moss has come back to life even after weeks of total drying out. Cold, hot, it doesn't seem to mind much. It's slow growing & slow to regenerate but very hard to kill (I've tried, lol).

I have Taiwan Moss and its been pretty much indestructible. Have had to get rid of loads of it through the years. Put it in the tank and let it do its thing.
