Hi, My fish tank is not clearing up, it has been cloudy for a good long week now. If you look closely at the tank you can actually see the cloudy water moving around. I dont know if i agravated the situation, but i had gotten a new filter and i rinsed the new carbon in the tank water instead of the sink tap. I just dipped it right into the tank. It made a really loud sizzling sound. The tank is much worse now. I am considering transfering the fish back to the ten gallon and starting with new water, i really need guidence on this issue i dont know what to do? I took a ph test and my water registered around a 8.2 kinda red. who knows what that means? Is it good or bad? Im trying to attach a picture of the tank.

I have included a picture link to the tank. Here it is... Click on cloudy..

wow thats a nice tank, it looks just like a nissan, how did you do that, incredible

You may be over feeding...

Hmmm...What's the pH of water straight from the tap, and then after it's sat out over night in a bowl? GH?

Rinsing the new filter in the tank may have contributed a bit, but this looks more like a bacterial issue than solid particulates. Cleaning schedule and method? What's in there? How long has it been setup? Test results?

The tank has been setup since last tuesday. I set it up immediatley using precycled water from my 10gallon. I had tested the facet ph and its was a red color around an 8.0 i guess. It has been cloudy so i have been doing water changes every other day. .Ive noticed that my plecos are paler than usual. I think it might be from the stress. IM also thinking its a bacterial issue, i had a fish die this morning with dropsy and it had a red lesion on its side.. Should i totally replace all the water and move the fish and start over? Im thinking i should. :(

Did you transfer in the media from the filter on the 10? Have you tested for ammonia/nitrites?

The water does not contain the nitrifying bacteria--it contains other beneficial bacteria, but not the ones a tank must have.

Yes when i originally tranfered the fish and water i used the carbon from the established tank. SHould i start the tank over? Now i have a new carbon in thier with a new filter though...

How long had the carbon been in the other filter? How long was it in this tank?

Starting the tank over without knowing why this happens means it will probably happen again. The cloudiness likely is not harming the fish--though high ammonia levels would be, which is why you should test for them. Tearing this apart, moving the fish, etc, will just stress them more--not helpful.

The old estab. carbon had been in the tank ever since yesterday when i changed it with the new one so for a week and a half. The tank water is worsening it seems like the only way to remedy this would to do a large water change and cycle the tank over. But i would transfer the fish first so they wouldent get freaked out by the water temp change.
