Help me convince my friend his tank set ups are wrong!!!!!

Just let him fall. He'll lose money and either A) get discouraged and quite fishkeeping, or B) try to find out why they all died overnight. Sadly, C) is "Just get new fish" and do nothing new. At that point you stop going over his house...

This thread makes me very sad. I hate the poor treatment of animals no matter how small or smart they are. Maybe send him to this thread and get him to read what we say.
A 1/2 gallon for a beta is really too small for it. The best bet for this guy is to go on CL and buy a bigger tank for schooling fish.

Have you actually seen any of these tanks?

I dont think I have ever even seen a 1 gal tank.
Maybe he is just pulling your leg, or has the sizes wrong, for some reason people have a weird sense of what size their tanks actually is.

They do sell 1 gallon corner tanks...small size aside they have horrendous dimensions too.

He thinks because they arnt dying that it means they are happy

Show him a picture of a homeless man living in a cardboard box. Then ask him if he thinks that just because the man is alive he is happy.

EDIT: Alternative method. Keep him in a small box for a week and then ask him if he's happy.

I agree, and it really makes me mad when people get pets and refuse to do the research to make sure they can actually keep it. I mean "Sea Monkeys" aka brine shrimp kits for kids is fine, but fish and bigger, come on guys. Like when people get dogs not realizing that the dog needs to be walked, fed, loved, and taken to the vet and such and the dog lives a sad, sick life, but since it's alive it must be happy, when it's just that they hang in there because they are loyal. Same thing that the OP's friend is doing to the fish, except the fish don't have an option of running away like a dog would. Sorry, long rant, but yea, overstocked. IDC if your friend is lazy, that's no excuse to mistreat a pet. I'm lazy (as lazy as they come with stuff like this) and even I did (and still do) the research for my pets. I still mess up, but I at least change it when I realize that. I've bought SO many fish that I've had to give away because they were too big, I know it was a waste of my money, but I didn't keep them once I learned my tank was too small... argh sorry people have been getting on my nerves lately. I'm done... :o

they're commonly very gaudy and have lousy filtration as well.

EDIT: also, i've noticed that not only do the wally worlds and such of this world have them, but most of the big name players also supply tanks anywhere from less than 1 gal. to 2.5 gallons as well. :nono:

Forget it. Unless someone specifically asks for help, they won't appreciate it and even if they DO ask, tread lightly.

ok so he found someone to take the gold fish... and he is getting a 10g for the 3 danios a tetra and a redtailed shark.
