I bought a 29 gallon tank this weekend and it is set up and running (freshwater), however I have a problem, I have no fish!!!!! Please help this newbie pick out what fish to get, I am clueless!!!!!!!!!! Thanks

get yourself 5 oscars, and 10 arowanas....

lol... you wont have room for water if you did...

actually, what you could do, is research like i did.. look at the fish guide and from there, decide which ones you like... then you can narrow it down further by seeing which ones are compatible with each other (difficulty of keeping, pH, water temp, agressiveness, etc)

why ask us which fish you should get? you have your own likes... not only would you feel better about picking out your own fish, but you'd learn a lot more if you just took the time to look at the fish profiles

A few questions to ask yourself would be:

1. Do I like lots of small fish or a couple bigger ones?
2. Do I like peaceful fish or aggressive ones?
3. Do I want to have hardy, easy to care for fish or a more challenging fish?
4. What is the parameters of my water (ph, hardness)?

If you can answer these then you will be on your way. If you can pick out the main type of fish you like then it is easy to figure out what other fish can go with that and you can ask people what fish they have successfully kept with the type you have chosen.

I would suggest also that you grab a pen and paper and head to where you plan on buying your fish. Walk around and write down the names of the fish you really like. Then you can research them and also ask people here if they are appropriate for your setup.

Do you know about the nitrogen cycle of a fish tank? It is more than just aging of water. There are plenty of great links if you would like some more information.

so now I feel like I am in over my head!!!! Nitrogen cycle??? I'm lost

as far as fish are concerned, I guess I would chose more smaller ones than fewer bigger ones, and peaceful easy care................I guess I need to head to my pet store and get some guidance........

the nitrogen cycle isnt a hard thing to grasp... just read about it and if you dont understand, just read again... contrary to popular belief (among non-experienced aquarists), youre much better off cycling the tank before you put fish in there... by doing this, you are greatly reducing the rish of having fish dir on you in the first week or so... good luck... and please dont rush into anything... there is no rush to get fish... just take your time so you can enjoy things later on

check out the freshwater newbie forum. There's lots of good information over there also. I think Orion Girl even posted a link with some suggested stocking plans or something at one time... I can't remember exactly where it was, just that it was in that forum. Good luck! Hope you love it as much as most of us do! Please ask any questions you may have. I am still pretty much a newbie too and this has been a great resource for me.
