okay, im new to this fish thing. i got a fish about a month ago as a party favor and tonite i noticed babies swimming in the tank. how is this possible? i only have one fish. so now i don't know what to do with the babies. can they stay in the tank? i think they are guppies, well that's what i have been told. will the mommy eat them? i need help.

although im not that expeireinced (xuse the spelling) i;d say the guppy was pregnant when you got it, im not sure whether she will it them or not but yeh i heard that f the fish were in a mixed tan at the shop they can come pregnant.

I've heard that sometimes the fry will get eaten, but not always. Never had guppies myself though.

I won't even begin to wonder who thought fish as a party favor was a good idea ;)

Some times the mother will eat some of the babies but ussualy a few will survive if you have some plants in the tank for them to hide in. What size tank are they in? If some of the babies do live and you have a male that survives you are going to have a lot of fish on your hands as guppies are prolific breaders. To feed them just crush up some flake food really fine and sprinkle it in.

Once a female is impregnated (which happens very easily) she can store sperm for many months. Once she has her first batch of fry she can easily have five more batches without ever encountering another male. If you want to keep the fry keep a look out for new ones in about 4 weeks.

The advice to provide lots of hiding places is spot on. If you do not really know anything about keeping fish tell us everything you can (especially about the tank), and we will get you on the right track. There is sooo much to learn. :read: But if you like your little party favor you'll enjoy taking care of her. Good luck and lets us help where we can.

PS: I discourage any other friends to had out fish as party favors any more. It’s just asking for fish to be poorly cared for.

well, i got up this morning and noticed that two of the babies were gone. then as i was watching my fish i seen the mom bite another baby. i hope the others survive. i don't think they are eating either. i smashed up the flakes but i see some of it at the bottom of the tank. there are some plants in my tank should i add a castle or something so that they can hide. i don't even know how much gallons it is.

If you've got proper lighting for plants in your tank you can float some java moss at the top of the tank for the fry to hide in.

Also, I recommend getting some food made specially for fry--it's ground up into minute particles, so it's easier for them to eat. I tried feeding crushed flakes to my little endlers and they had a terrible time eating until I switched over to the fry food.

Get a measuring tape, and measure how long the tank is, how tall the tank is, and how wide the tank is (front to back). Post the measurements and I or someone else will tell you the volume of your tank.

okay i got it. i need to buy some java moss, fry food, and measure my tank. i will post the measurements when i get back.

Dont buy a castle as a Hiding spot. Its not "realistic" But driftwood or something that looks realistic and the fish arent afraid to go near.
