Help Me Stock My 20 Gallon

Fish Compatible with Betta

Cory Cats~would be fine, but you already have otos as a sort of clean up crew, so I would go with something else (personal preference)
Danios/Minnows
Guppies~males might cause a problem with the flashy colorful tales, the betta might mistake for another male betta
Hatchets~neat looking, top dwelling,
Loaches~careful, some get pretty big!
Mollies
Platies
Plecos~Many of them get way too big for a 20g and produce alot of waste. I would skip on those unless you are particularly fond of a particular type that would fit in your size tank
Rasboras
Suckermouth Catfish
Swardtails
Tetras~lots of different kinds/colors, just avoid the nippy ones.

Thanks for those very useful comments, but being a newb and all I have a question.. I dont think I have an airstone, just a bubble disk, is that ok? also whats a bubble nest? and what does a betta need to build it? I only have one plant, but when I go to trade in my goldies on wednesday, I'll get one with big leaves.

Bubblenests are things male bettas build - just incase a female should stop by - they have some fun ;) and he ends up having to take care of a bunch of eggs.

Here is one mine built - photo taken a few days ago. He doesnt need anything special to do it - just a "quiet" corner in the tank with very little surface movement. Thats what i put the floating plant in there for.

airstone, bubble disc, bubble wall, I think they are all the same thing. However I have no idea if they are bad with real plants or not. If you like the look of them, you migh post the question in the plant forum and see what the experts say!!

a bubble nest is just a lump of bubbles at the surface of the water, bettas will build them to breed (even when they're alone) mine doesn't build them anymore, I think he is still happy, but the filter agitates the surfact too much. do a google search, you should be able to find a good picture of one.

As for plants, you might want to go for real or silk since the bettas fins are kind of delicate, they can get torn on sharp plastic plants/decorations

Alright, I might have to get rid of the bubbles then..

What he does is he somehow mixes air and water/ saliva in his mouth and then blows the bubbles on the surface. He does that all day long - not constantly - but in between swimming around, posing/ fighting with himself, eating and all the other betta things he does. Every now and then he goes to his nest - checks, moves it around a little, blows some more bubbles and back to patroling his tank.

I have 5 Platys with my Betta in a 10 gal. planted tank. They are very entertaining together. After looking at those rainbows, I would go with those and some Platys with your Betta and Ottos. That should make a great looking tank. What color is your Betta?
