Do you have live plants?

Because if you dont have live plants you dont need light in the tank. Keep the lights off all the time.

If you have fish in there then only turn the lights on for a half hour around the time of feeding.

Is the tank near a window? Light from outside can make algae grow as well.

When your tank is finished cycling you can add a bristlenose pleco that will clean up the algae in no time. ;)

Keeping the lights off all the time except for when feeding isn't neccesary or in my opinion healthy for the fish. Light dictates a large part of a fish's biological cycle. 8-10hrs of light shouldn't cause excessive algea growth period. Make sure though that the tank is not recieving direct sunlight. Another problem is that you have Nitrites, this is unsuitable for fish. If you have fish in there now you should do a water change of 40-50%. Nitrites are deadly to fish, and could also be attributing to the algal bloom. If your keeping the lights on for longer than I mentioned that could be why your getting the algea problem, or the tank is getting sunlight. This combined with the abnormal amount of nutrients in the water can cause the algea to grow, if you cut or reduce one you'll probably cause the algea to at least stop spreading so fast.

Well, i know when i go snorkelling in a lake its pretty dark down there. Fish dont naturally get bright lights. Its true- they do need sunlight to get vitamins and what-not from, just like we do. But having a bright neon tank light on all day is not nessecary for them. Having it on for a few hours in the evening when feeding will suffice. There is most likely natural room-light that gets to the tank and will be adequate enough for fish to see with. My fish are up and awake even before i get out of bed because of the light in the room from the window (no sun in the morning, i face west). They know thier cycle, just dont keep the lights on much past dark or you will stress them out.

Cutting back on lighting will really help your algae 'problem'.

And NatakuTseng, he said he's still in the cycle process, thus of course he would be reading nitrites. ;)
