I just joined my son loved fish so we got him a tank for his birthday and it has been a complete nightmare. Our current situation is a platy that gave birth. She looked sickly was swimming facing down, sideways, my husband said he saw her upside down at a point. We put her in a separate tank in the big tank to keep our guppies from harassing her. We fully expected to find a dead fish that night when we came home. Instead I found one baby. I put the tray in to separate mom from the fry. I've been looking for more babies and haven't seen any. She continues to swim awkwardly. I've been told peas work she could have swallowed to much air but I have a hard time keeping them in with her because of the grate separating her from the fry. I'm trying my best to care for momma and baby. I don't know if she has more babies on the way, I have another platy that seems protective and every time I am watching her he swims up shaking his head at me and the female seems like she wants to get to him but I don't know if she's done giving birth and she still swims awkwardly I wouldn't want her to be harassed by the other fish.

It does not look and sound as if the mother is going to survive. But the good news is the fry looks healthy, give him some aquatic plants, and some very fine crushed flake food, and soon he'll be big enough to be added to the tank. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask there are many knowledgeable folks here.

Yes and she might be having trouble giving birth. I raise Plattys and I have had a female die from giving birth. It was like she couldn't spit them out and she basically died while full of fry. Also my Plattys always have more than one fry. I think it's odd yours only had one that's why I think she may just not be able to deliver. I find that you don't have to separate the fry as long as you have plants for them to hide or rocks also feed some veggies to them like duckweed. Since I put duckweed in my tanks they have really taken off. I have a channel called Blueice aquatics on YouTube with videos of my tanks and I have a few Platty lines going there's the light blue line there is a red line and a black and blue line. All are spawning. If you have any questions just leave a comment. And I wish you the best of luck.
