My fish are my babies
ok i just bought a digital ph monitor form pinpoint because i dont like the inaccuracy of comparing color strips or liquid tests and i spent the last hour calibrating it until it would no longer change. . i went by the book and all. it is evening so ph is kinda low but its showing my ph at 7.8 and the liquid and test stips say its at 8.1.. all my corals are open and happy and the fish show no signs of stress and my corals are actually spreading. the test strips usually read my ph at 8.3 so i dont know what to believe can anyone help me out here? please help im so worried about the ph even thought the animals have been doing great for almost 2 years.

I was using Oceanic salt for a while before I realized it was lowering my PH. My PH was all the way down to 7.6 before I noticed it. All my fish and coral survived. The bad thing was i was using the liquid test strips and they were reading 8.1ish as well. If i never got the PH meter im using now im quite sure i wouldnt have coral or fish at the moment. My PH is back up around 8.3, 8.28 to be exact, well according to my PH meter. If i were you i would go off what the PH meter is saying. If you feel its not calibrated right take it to your LFS im sure they can calibrate it for you.

It is not unusual to find my pH low in the A.M.. 7.8 I don't really get too concerned about!
pH will climb as the lights come on, and drop after the lights go out.
A properly calibrated pH meter will get my vote over any strip or color test at any time. i.e. two people can look at the results of the same test and come up with slightly different answers.
The main problem with using pH meters is the calibration of them. First, it takes a bit of perseverence to keep going back and forth between the 7 and 10 until it is stable, and, even when checking the sample you have to wait for a while until it is stable.
Many standards used for calibration are not worth using. This is based on a report by Randy Holmes-Farley, resident chemical forum person on Reef Central, who tested a large number of standards and found most to be wanting, as far as accuracy goes.
I forget which ones in particular were best, but I know, since that time, I have only purchase standards from a scientific supply company.
A search on Randy's site would probably reveal a thread about it.
OK, I found a link in my files to his article.
ON pH TESTING by RANDY HOMES-FARLEY

Another thing I discovered in my own case on low pH was in winter with the house shut up, the tanks weren't getting a proper air water exchange.
To see if this is the problem, take a sample of water after testing, and put it outside with aeration for an hour or two, and, if after that, the pH has risen, you know you need to get more fresh air supply to the top of the tank.
i.e. open windows, install fresh air vent, install HRV...........

well ill check out that site when i get out of class. and i know it was calibrated right because i spent 2 hours doing it untill id didnt move. as for the all my animals theya re all doing great evne when the meter reads 7.7 so that was the confusion. and i cant take it to a loacal aquarium store because i am the manager of a local aquarium store so i know it was calibrated correctly. thx for your responces hopefully ill figure it out... this morning the ph was 7.8 when i w:dance: oke up so well just have to see how it goes.

What brand did you buy? I was just wondering of some good ones out there- would like to get one.

pinpoint and i called the company just now and he said that it is a common problem and to trust the digital monitor and then explained it in great detail after he asked me tons of questions about my reef. he knew his stuff and could back himself up so i know he wasnt just protection the company. so it says its 8.00 so i can trust it he said bring it up to 8.1 or 8.2 on the monitor in the next week and ill be fine:dance2:

Nice! Yes, it always helps when customer service agents know what they're talking about.

Sorry- I see in your very first that you mentioned it was Pinpoint brand.
