Hi all.

Don't know how you spell Platy but hopefully you get the idea. I have just returned home from work to find one of my platys sort of floating on it's side yet still apparently alive. I went to fish it out with the net and it swam off the correct way up but then returned to hide in the plants and reverted to lying on it's side a little off the bottom. Presumably it is on the way to the great aquarium in the sky. Is there anything I can do to save it and can anyone suggest what is wrong with it. Seemed ok yesterday!

:(

Could be 100 different problems, but without knowing anything about your tank, your water or your feeding routine it's really tough to tell.

Once they start to die it doesn't take long. What are your water parameters (PH, amonia & nitrate at least)? What is your water temp? What size tank is it? What other fish are in the tank? How many other fish? Have you made any changes to anything going in or out of the tank? How much are you feeding? How often? What is your water change routine? How long has the tank been set up? Where is it in your house (next to a window or door can cause temp swings)?

Answer these and we'll take it from there.

PS, you should give your water parameters & as much detail as possible when asking questions, it helps us help you :)

BTW, you spelled Platy correctly. I figured that I'd take that thought off your mind and let you concentrate on the task at hand.

Phew, that's a lot of questions but here goes

What are your water parameters (PH, amonia & nitrate at least)?

Do be honest I don't know the PH. Ammonia is 0 and nitrate is a little over 20.

What is your water temp?
About 70

What size tank is it?
96 litre

What other fish are in the tank?
One guppy
Two Plecos
Three other platys
Five Harlequins
(if these numbers seem strange it is because their friends have passed away over the last few months. I will be re-stocking once the tank stabilises as I seem to lose around one fish a month at the moment)

Have you made any changes to anything going in or out of the tank?
I've been fighting black algae, so there has been a fair bit of change with rocks/plants going in and out of the tank.

How much are you feeding?
One frozen cube every three days

What is your water change routine?
One bucket a week treated with Nitragon (I had a problem with nitrates in the tap water) and Tap Safe.

How long has the tank been set up?
About a year and a half.

Where is it in your house?
It is near a window but the temperature seems fairly constant

It is still alive too! It is really bent up though and seems to have a slight bulge on its side. Does this sound like a swimbladder problem or something else?
