Help! Snails problem!

snails are great in planted tanks. They eat the dead plant matter, help keep algae under control and clean up any uneaten food. Also make great dead body removers.I have a ton in my 55 gallon. If a fish dies its gone in a matter of hours. I never have to worry about a spike.

You only get population bursts when overfeeding/plant health as their can only be as many snails as food will allow.

I like my snails. I'm at a point where I'm almost getting agitated at this misconception of them as pests. People always asking how to get rid of them when they should just be happy they have them.

There is a bleach solution you can make to dip the plants in before placing them in the tank, however I have never used this method so I don't know the recipe. That in mind, if it were me, I would dip the plant in the solution and then dip it in a dechlor solution afterward and then put it in the tank.

Wow! Thanks for the info. My husband told me that snails are pests and that they will eat all my plants. And that when they die, they cause spikes in the water. It's good to know that it is not really a problem afterall!

Be careful with the bleach dip. Keep the roots out and be really careful with fine leaved plants. I personally agree that the snails do far more good than harm in a planted tank. I like the little guys b-boppin around. I have at least 3 different kinds.

snails

at night I put a shotglass with white bread in it, placed it on it's side at the bottom corner of the tank, took a small rock and placed it on the top so it doesn't float away, and in the morning, believe it or not the shot glass had 20+ snails in it, I did this for a few nights and it eventually got rid of the problem, also I have 2-3 larger clown loaches which eat the snails. The smaller clown loaches will kill snails but they leave the shells which are high in calcium. Other things to use are lettuce. And yes the snails where problably intoduced to your tank from the plants. My LFS told me to rinse the plants in a small bucket with water and a tiny bit of bleach, then remove plants from the bucket and rinse well with COLD tap water. Then they should be 99% snail free. When I say a tiny bit of bleach I mean like a 5 gallon pail of water with like 4-5 tablespoons of bleach, and leave the plant in it for 10-15 minutes. And like what Rich said put the plant in the solution upside down, and do not allow the roots to enter the solution.
