my swordtail is pregnant how do i know when to take her out of the tank?
she has a gravid spot and is fat.

Do you mean put her in a breeding trap to seperate her from the fry?

If your going to do that then you need to wait till she looks like she is going to pop. It is all guess work. If possible the better thing to do would be to provide plenty of hiding places like plants and small caves in your tank. Then just let nature happen and that will result in much less stress for the mom.

I agree with web. Traps can work, but they ca stress the mom and make her drop young to early or make her keep the young too long. Both situations are far from ideal for the fry. If you do want to use a trap you may want to watch a wait to see just wait she looks like before she drops her first batch ( I this may be hard because you are headed out of town) then ext time you can put her in the trap when she looks just right. Taking pictures helps too!

I'll post this here too, just in case you miss it in your other post;
'I would just leave her where she is. Anything you do that causes stress could make her drop the fry before they are ready, and that is not a pretty thing to see. Even those holding pens can sometimes cause females to drop prematurely. As a result of this, I waited till the female had them on her own and just siphoned up the fry and then put them into the breeding nets afterwards. As long as you've got a few decent hiding spot most of the fry should make it and you can pull them later. Plus, this will not be the last time she has fry, in fact, I hope you have some sort of future plan for the fry because she will most likely drop once a month.'
