i am setting up a mudskipper tank and i wanted to have at the most 3 inches of water. do i need a air stone or will they be ok with no air stone. when i say that i meen do they breath air or not. o ya how do you clean the sand, what should i use for filtration.

ok.. first off you NEVER "need" an airstone for oxygen... airstones are 99.9% looks, and about 0.01% function... they do nothing but "look neat"

most of your airation comes from water breaking the surface of the water-- that and normal gas exchange that occurs naturally

as far as mudskippers- I will leave that part up to an expert as I have never kept them

Is there a reason you want a maximum of 3" of water? They are fish; they breathe with gills. More water volume is always better, and they are perfectly capable swimmers, but they do need some sort of dry land perch. 7 is right, an airstone won't be necessary, they are mainly aesthetic. For filtration, if you are doing a shallow tank, you will most likely be stuck using some sort of internal filter. Fluval makes a few, as does Whisper. Cleaning the sand can be done with a gravel vacuum, just hover the vac over the sand bed to pick up anything on top, rather than actually vacuuming into the sand bed like you do with gravel.

indian mudskipper my lfs in which has been almost correct on everything is keeping them in a tank with no more than 3 in. of water

I have about 3 inches of water in my tank but I also have a very cool filter/waterfall that runs all the time. Here are pics of how I set my tank up. You should look at Mokomons threads too. She has a nice setup.

In the beginning..

That is a sweet setup, Jacki! Did you build the waterfall?

Well that's right! Nothing is too good for your little guys, Moko and Mel.:)

EDIT: Went to the link and looked at the filter/waterfall. That is so cool!!
