Hi guys,

I was given a 60g six sided (hexagon) tank. I've kept fish before but not in this type of tank and I am looking for some advice as to what to stock in there. I want this to be a simple community tank, but the weird shape throws off my stock calculations, maybe some of you vets know better then I do. I know its not ideal but it was free with cabinet and loads of equip, and its beautiful. I have a full package of bio spira waiting to go, just need some ideas on the community.

Thanks

you can pick alot of options.. what species do you like? tropical or cichlid? any prefrence?

i've never had a hex but i wouldn't keep a schooling fish in one ... they need room to actually school back and fourth.

I sort of second that - smaller schooling fish under 2-3 inches would probably have more then enough room, but larger (above 3 inches) schooling fish wouldn't have enough room.

Thats true but the bigger hexs(60 g) or usually 20 inches wide on each side. and a good 2 foot and 1/2 tall

Oh, if that's the case then, I would't put any schooling fish the grows to more than two inches in there.

I have a hex. I forgot how big it is but it's only around 30gal. I've used it as a reef tank, kept a flowerhorn in it, used it as grow out tank for a couple of bichirs, and now it's a community tank with some red phantom tetras, clown loaches, and apistos in there. And before someone flame me, I'm using it to grow out the loaches so they can go in the bigger tank.

Thanks for the ideas guys. So can some of you post some stocking examples if you were in my shoes. I don't have any particular preference other then having as peaceful and low maintenance tank as possible, due to the high maintenance cichlids I have in other tanks, thanks?

You could keep 6-9 tiger barbs in there with some cories, you could do a similar number of tetras, you could put several small angelfish in there for a while since they will use the vertical tank (but they will probably outgrow it eventually)

That sounds good...
6-9 tetras
2 angel fish
what about an algea eater something that will stay small?
